Typical Controllable Pitch Propeller Configurations
The ACG System is a complete gear and CP-propeller solution. It includes a CP-propeller, propeller shaft, and a gearbox with a built-in clutch. The servo motor system is placed inside the gearbox.
This solution has a push-pull rod from the pitch mechanism in the hub through the propeller shaft to the servo motor piston located in the gearbox. Push-pull rod systems are typically recommended due to their simplicity and ease of access for service and repairs.
The EACG System is a complete gear and CP-propeller solution. It includes a CP-propeller, propeller shaft, and a gearbox with a built-in clutch. The servo motor system is placed inside the propeller hub.
This solution features a low pressure oil system controlled from an oil distribution system within the gearbox (or from a separate OD-box). The hub servo system is recommended when the length of a propeller shaft exceeds 20 meters, or in cases where propellers are highly loaded with large servo forces and medium/long shafts.
The EF System is a complete gear and CP-propeller solution. It includes a CP-propeller, propeller shaft, and a gearbox with a built-in clutch. The servo motor system is located inside the propeller hub, and a radial OD-box is placed within the shaft line.
This solution is ideal for propellers with long shafts, or for stand-alone deliveries of CP-propellers and shafts.
Creating progress with tailor-made solutions
The varying working conditions of a vessel require flexible solutions in order to execute all tasks efficiently. The goal is for the ship’s propulsion system to be optimised to suit the ship’s actual service profile. With different configurations of engines and gearboxes, combined with propellers and tunnel thrusters, it is possible to achieve optimal flexibility, efficiency and economy.
Diesel Mechanical Propulsion
Simplistic systems suitable to all ship types with a narrow service profile. The system is driven by either a constant or slightly varying engine rpm. Simultaneous running of an el-generator with fixed or floating frequency is possible by a PTO (Power Take Out unit).
Diesel Electric Propulsion
Flexible and efficient solution for a wide and varied range in propulsion power. The propeller is driven by one or more electric motors via a reduction gearbox. The power is delivered from the ship’s electric supply system. The most efficient solution is achieved through variable rpm from one or more of the electric motors, to ensure that the propeller has optimised working conditions in the entire power range.
A hybrid system can be a simple and efficient solution designed for boost or take-me-home condition. The configuration enable ships with variable power requirements to run at high propeller efficiency.
A hybrid system can be a complex configuration with numerous operational modes. The large number of operational modes enable the engines and propellers to run optimally over a wide power range. The hybrid propulsion systems benefit from the best from two systems; the combination of electric propulsion and diesel drive.

Scana’s CRP (Contra Rotating Propulsion) solution is a unique combination of known technologies. The CRP Permanent Magnet system merges highly efficient permanent magnet motors with efficient contra rotating propellers to form a cutting-edge solution like no other.
Thorque™ is a compact and efficient propulsion system developed by Scana, utilising the best in permanent magnet technology. Thorque™ is available in both controllable and fixed pitch propeller configurations.
Thorque™ in system configurations
Thorque™ is available in both single screw and twin screw configurations.
A plain single screw configuration may consist of a Thorque™ controlled by a frequency converter (VFD) operated from Scana remote control system and a shaftline with CP (controllable pitch) propeller. The configuration is also available in FP (fixed pitch) propeller configurations.
Thorque™ can also be included in a complete PhiDrive™ system, which consists of a permanent magnet generator directly and electrically connected to a Thorque™ running the CP propeller.
The PhiGrid™ configuration can be referred to as a PTO/PTI possibility for the PhiDrive™ system, where the PhiGrid™ distributes power to the main switchboard for other consumers of the ship.

Scana propulsion systems can be integrated with any medium speed diesel engines. Scana has both independent and non-exclusive supply agreements with major diesel engine manufacturers for easy contract handling of terms and conditions. With a proven track record and strong reference projects with major engine manufacturers, rest assured Scana will provide an optimal integration of diesel engines and propulsion systems alike.
Scana & Niigata Propulsion Package
This package is a prime example of a possible package supply. The Scana & Niigata Propulsion Package combines the best of both worlds — with engines from Niigata’s MG28AHX engine series configured with Scana Propulsion’s gearboxes, CP propellers, tunnel thrusters, and remote control systems. The cooperation is non-exclusive.
